The Ministry of Education in Ghana has officially announced that the country will resume participation in the May/June international version of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) starting in 2026.

This major development is expected to align Ghana’s examination system with other West African Examinations Council (WAEC) member states, strengthening regional academic standards.
Speaking at the 74th Annual Council Meeting of WAEC in Accra, the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, revealed that the decision was made following directives from:
- President John Dramani Mahama
- Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang
According to Dr. Apaak:
“The move will enable Ghana to join other member states in administering the 2026 WASSCE under the WAEC framework.”
Dr. Clement Apaak also emphasized that the Ministry of Education will continue to collaborate closely with WAEC to maintain the credibility of the examination system.
“The Ministry of Education remains committed to collaborating closely with the Council to ensure a process that safeguards the credibility of our examinations,” he added.
